Interview: Filmmaker Dave McLean on Scottish comedy ‘Schemers’

Out now on DVD and digital.

Dave McLean’s Schemers premiered at Edinburgh Film Festival back in 2019 to rave reviews. After a small theatrical run mid-lockdown last Autumn, the Dundee-set biopic is finally set to arrive on DVD and digital platforms from January 25th and we sat down with the director to talk about the film.

After an injury ends his football career, Davie (Conor Berry) starts promoting gigs with his two friends Scot (Sean Connor) and John (Grant Robert Keelan). They start with small setups in the university union to impress medical student Shona (Tara Lee), but their concerts become bigger and more ambitious when they find a knack for it. As they do, their bills stack up and they find themselves in deep water with local gangster Fergie (Alastair Thomson Mills). In a final bid to raise the funds to pay what they owe him, the boys decide to go all out for their biggest concert yet: getting Iron Maiden to play Dundee’s iconic events venue, the Caird Hall.

An auto-biographical project for McLean, the filmmaker sat down with us over Zoom to discuss what it was like making his first feature. As well as that, McLean talks about why he made the change from music to film, what that Iron Maiden concert was actually like and what his future as a director holds: a sequel to Schemers. The film is now available on DVD and digital platforms.

For as long as I can remember, I have had a real passion for movies and for writing. I'm a superhero fanboy at heart; 'The Dark Knight' and 'Days of Future Past' are a couple of my favourites. I'm a big sci-fi fan too - 'Star Wars' has been my inspiration from the start; 'Super 8' is another personal favourite, close to my heart... I love movies. All kinds of movies. Lots of them too.
