Here’s some big news. It seems that a third film in the National Treasure series is in the works over at Disney. The trade Variety reports that Justin Bartha, Diane Kruger, Harvey Keitel, Armando Riesco, Jon Voight will return alongside Nicolas Cage in a potential third film which is being developed by the first two films’ director Jon Turteltaub and write Chris Bremner.
The two National Treasure movies, released in 2004 and 2007, brought in a huge $804.9 million in global box-office receipts and revolved around a historical mystery setting. Cage played the lead role of Benjamin Gates, a daring treasure hunter.
The trade also says that a ten-episode TV series is also in the works for Disney+, which is a reimagining of the franchise. Mira Nair will direct the series for the streamer with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and writers Marianne and Cormac Wibberley also on board. Variety says that the series will ‘explore identity, community and patriotism through the eyes of Jess Morales, a 20-year-old DREAMer who sets off on an adventure to recover lost treasure and uncover her mysterious family history.’
