While there have already been many video game-to-film adaptations over the years, it can be said that many have been hit or miss in nature. From the release of Mortal Kombat back in the nineties to Netflix reviving some of the most beloved games in the form of a series, most people tend to dismiss video game films and series as something strictly for children.
However, some of the more curious fans of television and films have given Castlevania a shot, and have ended up engrossed in the lore. The magic of film adaptations of video games is that there’s always so much more than what’s on the surface.
That said, it can be challenging to kick back and watch your favorite series when life gets in the way. The use of cannabidiol (CBD) products to help you kick back and enjoy films might seem a little overboard for those who have never tried it, but the potential health benefits (and lack of risks) are worth it. You can also experiment with the proper CBD dosage to help personalize the experience.
When you’re finally at ease and ready to absorb this series, is Castlevania worth it for those who aren’t fans of video games?
A relatable antagonist
The video games are all about beating up Dracula, which is the long and short of the main plot. That said, there are many nuances in the game and little additions to the lore that have enriched the series over the years. It allowed the video games to eventually explore the reason why Dracula attacked in the first place, and it was the loss of his wife, Lisa.
Such is the story that the Netflix adaptations take, where the church brands Lisa as a witch and burns her at the stake. Thus begins Dracula’s centuries-long pursuit of revenge, and surprisingly, it’s easy to root for him in the series.
The heroes that hint at something more
All of the protagonists of the Netflix series can be used in the video game versions in one way or another. They each have their unique storyline that can be vastly different depending on whether you are looking into the series of the games. Castlevania is all about the lineage of Belmonts facing Dracula, though they always had help. Even Dracula’s son, Alucard, rises against his father, and his game, Symphony of the Night, is arguably the most popular in the series.
A surprising mix of joy and sorrow
There is a lot more to how the story goes than it initially seems. While it’s about defeating Dracula, his reasons feel valid, and the climax of the second season is probably one of the most depressing moments in a video game-to-film adaptation. Surprisingly, in the third season, things take a more joyful tone, though it starts to ramp up to reach a satisfying end in the fourth season.
Even those who are not avid video game fans will find much to enjoy with this animated series on Netflix. It seems simple on the surface, but just about everything used in the series is steeped in video game lore. It’s an interesting journey and one that even non-video game fans will likely enjoy.
