Road to FrightFest: Director Mel House discusses ‘Mystery Spot’

Mystery Spot will receive its world premiere at Arrow Video FrightFest on Monday 30th August 2021.

The road to Arrow Video FrightFest has well and truly begun. Running from the 26th – 30th August, the 22nd edition of the festival will play host to sixty brand new films that champion the dark heart of cinema. These screenings will be a mixture of UK, International, and World premieres, and if you’re a fan of all things dark and horrific, this is the place to be. One film that will be receiving its world premiere and hoping to startle and disturb attendees is Mystery Spot.

Mystery Spot will screen Discovery Screen One on Monday 30th August. The film stars friend of FrightFest, and karaoke night legend, Graham Skipper alongside Nightmare on Elm Street alumni Lisa Wilcox. Directed by Mel House, the story is one that works best when kept under wraps, but revolves around an abandoned mystery spot attraction and the strange power it wields over the guests at a nearby motel. It’s a mind-bending and captivating slice of science-fiction laced drama, one that packs a heavy emotional punch. House knows exactly which strings to pull to elicit all kinds of feelings, and you might need a pack of tissues or two to survive Mystery Spot. With the film being so restrained it allows Wilcox and Skipper to dig deep to really showcase the turmoil and flux that their characters are in. Since 2016 we’ve seen Skipper appear in a film in some guise or another practically every year. The FrightFest family adore him and his larger-than-life characters, but in Mystery Spot they are going to witness a newer more paternal side that really demonstrates his range.

Ahead of the world premiere at FrightFest, we spoke with Mel to find out how he was feeling about the screening, how A Nightmare on Elm Street changed the trajectory of his life, and the very personal circumstances that inspired Mystery Spot.

Mystery Spot will receive its world premiere at Arrow Video FrightFest on Monday 30th August 2021. Tickets for the screening can be purchased on the FrightFest website.
