Sony announces sequels to ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ and ‘Venom’; Third ‘Spider-Verse’ movie to be huge

As part of the CinemaCon event in Las Vegas, which kicked off in the city yesterday, Sony Pictures has announced that it will kick into productions a new Venom movie and a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

The Venom movies have made a whopping $856 million and $502 million and have proved hugely popular with fans. With those numbers a sequel was inevitable.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife was also popular, pulling in $197 million worldwide on a reported $75 million budget. That makes it profitable so a further adventure featuring the new generation of ghost hunters is more than worth the studio’s while.

Both projects are in the early stages of development, so no further details were revealed at the Sony panel in Vegas, but we’ll obviously keep you posted.

Elsewhere, Sony also revealed that the third movie in the animated ‘Spider-Verse’ series will see 240 characters in the feature, spanning six universes. More than 1000 people are working on the 2024-released production, the most on any animated movie ever.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse, the second film in the series, is arriving in 2023 and that massive third movie, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-verse, will hit cinemas a year later.
