BRIDESMAIDS was one of the most successful comedies of 2011 – grossing a staggering nine times the amount it cost to produce – but the seemingly inevitable sequel could fall through, due to an apparent rift between Universal and the stars/writers of the film.
The hollywood rumour mill is typically rife with potential reasons for the breakdown in communication, including Kristen Wiig’s (co-writer and star of the original) increasingly convoluted schedule, and reluctance to pursue with a sequel due to a financial feud. Wiig refused to comment, but it is believed that several of the six main cast members were left with a bitter taste in their mouths after receiving a relatively minuscule bonus of $100,000; after such a lucrative outing, which netted more than $250 million profit, it could be construed as bad form on the part of the studio.
It appears that Wiig may be one of the few people in the film industry who values the art form, her morals and her integrity more than the shiny objects and vast mansions the hefty pay cheques can afford you. Her next few projects include the dramedy, FRIENDS WITH KIDS, the indie picture IMOGENE, in which she stars opposite Annette Bening, and Sean Penn’s THE COMEDIAN, where she will appear alongside Robert De Niro.
Despite Universal chief, Ron Meyer’s best attempts to persuade Wiig to return for a sequel (undoubtedly with a large sum of cash), she has stood firm with her co-writer, Annie Mumolo, stating ‘Annie and I aren’t planning a sequel. We are writing something else.’ However, this does not mean that Universal will not go ahead with the sequel. It just means that, not for the first time, hollywood may opt for quantity over quality.
