Based on the children’s book of the same name Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile is the latest slice of entertainment for families to feast on. The story follows the incredibly charming tale of a singing crocodile called Lyle (Shawn Mendes). Set in modern day New York, the journey begins as Lyle is discovered by Hector P. Valenti (Javier Bardem) in a pet shop. Hector has aspirations of stardom and believes that a singing crocodile is just the ticket. Lyle’s stage fright gets in the way however, and Hector ventures off in search of new ventures. Mr. Primm (Scoot McNairy), Mrs. Primm (Constance Wu) and their son Josh (Winslow Figley), later move into Hector’s house where Josh uncovers and befriends the lonely crocodile. The two help bring out the best in each other, so when events conspire to rip them apart, they put a drastic plan into motion to stay together.
Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile is as disarmingly sweet as you would expect, given its origins. It manages to be that balance of playfully silly that entertains younger minds whilst having a strong heartwarming message for older audience members. The songs are also catchy enough to get stuck in your head. They were written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul who are known for their work on La La Land and The Greatest Showman. Of the two movies, the music in Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile most closely resembles that in The Greatest Showroom, giving the film plenty of repeat viewing value.
The disc’s special features are worthy of merit as, for a family title, there is quite a lot to digest. First, there’s a cute little blooper reel, as well as sing-along versions of four of the songs from the movie. The disc also includes deleted scenes and two music videos. The highlights though are the featurettes, which offer insight into the creation of the film and Lyle, and Story Time with Shawn Mendes and Javier Bardem. This is a sweet addition to the disc and a perfect way to settle the little ones down before bed.
If you have little ones at home, then Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile is the perfect film to snuggle together on the sofa with. A disarming easy watch that isn’t too taxing on the adults in the audience, Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile will keep the kids transfixed time and time again.
