Interview: Joe Lynch on remembering the late Stuart Gordon with his new film ‘Suitable Flesh’

The late Stuart Gordon was a director unafraid to push the envelope of genre cinema. His features Re-Animator, From Beyond, and Castle Freak mixed gore, sex, and cosmic horror and delighted a generation of fans. Much of his more popular films were closely linked to the writings of H.P Lovecraft, Gordon effortlessly granting them a modernised spin on Lovecraft’s traditional tales. Sadly in 2020, Gordon passed away, but his cinematic legacy remains. His great career has been honoured by director Joe Lynch in the wonderfully weird, Suitable Flesh.

A film which premiered at TriBeCa, Suitable Flesh is dedicated to Stuart Gordon and was made with the help and involvement of a number of career-long collaborators of the late director. Based on the H.P Lovecraft story, The Thing on the Doorstep, Suitable Flesh stars Heather Graham as psychiatrist Elizabeth Derby. After a chance encounter, Elizabeth becomes obsessed with helping a young patient, Asa Waite (Judah Lewis), suffering from extreme personality disorder. But her help leads her into dark occult danger as she tries to escape a horrific fate…

Suitable Flesh has all the qualities of a Stuart Gordon movie, but filtered through the eye of Joe Lynch. Lynch first came to the attention of horror fans with his sequel to 2003’s Wrong Turn – Wrong Turn 2: Dead End. Since then Lynch has go on to direct a plethora of projects including several episodes of TV series Creepshow and the brilliant Mayhem. With Suitable Flesh Joe presents a new side to his directing talents and has crafted a film that is sensual, sinister, provocative and entertaining.

Ahead of the world premiere at TriBeCa we caught up with Joe to go deep into this very special project.

Suitable Flesh debuted at TriBeCa and will next be screened at Fantasia International Film Festival in July.
