Originally released as an anthology film series in 1982, Creepshow , has recently been given a second life. Shudder resurrected the property in 2019, reworking the concept into a television format. Following in the tradition of the film, each episode covers multiple tales of the macabre. Upon launch in 2019, Creepshow earned Shudder its highest viewing numbers ever. The resounding success has seen the show return season after season, but the only way to watch Creepshow was by subscribing to Shudder. Now that has all changed as seasons 1, 2, and 3 have all arrived onto blu-ray.
Of all the streaming services, Shudder remains the only one to ensure that some of its exclusive content makes its way to physical media. That they are happy to help champion the physical format is to be commended as without these blu-rays, Creepshow could be lost forever. Fans can now hold on to the show and enjoy the episodes time and time again. Plus, each season comes complete with a variety of extras. Season one includes several cast and crew audio commentaries. Season two features behind the scenes featurettes, and season three includes a full-length Comic Con panel.
The show itself sticks close to the tone of the films. Showrunner Greg Nicotero brings some continuity, having previously worked on Creepshow 2. A big plus for the show is that, wherever possible, it embraces the use of practical effects. These effects were an integral part of what made the films so special and that the tradition continues is heartwarming. Another draw for audiences is the amount of talent involved in every episode. Looking through the cast and crew list is like taking a role call of the best people working in horror today. Directors include Joe Lynch, David Bruckner, Roxanne Benjamin, Tom Savini, as well as Nicotero himself. Each director has their own distinct voice and style, so no two stories are ever the same.
The cast is an even bigger pool of talent. Appearing over the course of the three seasons are horror legends Barbara Crampton, David Arquette, Tobin Bell, Adrienne Barbeau, Ashley Laurence, and Keith David. It is not just recognised horror faces making an appearance though; Creepshow also feature performances from the likes of Anna Camp, Adam Pally, and Breckin Meyer who are all better known for their comedy work. Given Creepshow ’s blending of humour and horror, their inclusion works perfectly. Creepshow has also presented an early stepping stone for talents such as Kid Cudi and Cailey Fleming. The list goes on with a wealth of familiar faces from film and television. That the show can get all these people is a testament to its quality.
With two tales each episode, Creepshow is a brilliantly simple watch. It’s a great show to kick back and relax with. The short nature of each narrative means that this is not a programme that is going to fry your mind, which is welcome after a hard day at work. With so many diverse and entertaining stories it is hard to single any out, though the animated Halloween episode is worth highlighting. Featuring the voice work of Kiefer Sutherland and Joey King, this animated delight adapted stories by Stephen King and his son Joe Hill.
Creepshow is the perfect easy-viewing for horror fans. Packed full of familiar faces and the occasional easter egg, watching Creepshow is the best way to spend October. With over thirty episodes to enjoy across the three seasons, these box-sets can take you to Halloween and beyond.
