A 4K re-release of James Cameron’s epic The Abyss is getting the 4K treatment and it looks like it is heading into cinemas – certainly in the U.S.

We know this as we have an official trailer for the film and a confirmed stateside release date: 6th December. Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Michael Biehn, Leo Burmester, Todd Graff, John Bedford Lloyd, J.C. Quinn, and Kimberly Scott line-up among the impressive cast of the film. I literally haven’t seen this for years and, judging by this new trailer, we’re in for a massive treat as the 4K restoration looks amazing.

When the crew of an underwater oil rig in the middle of the ocean are enlisted by the U.S. government to assist in the rescue of an American nuclear submarine during the height of the Cold War, they discover a strange and mysterious force living in the deep and their rescue mission becomes an adventure into the wondrous and the unknown.

The film was originally released back in 1989 and it won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects the following year. There have been some special editions over time, specifically back in 1993 when the release was the definitive version of the film. Oh I cannot wait to see this on the big screen.

Looking at reports, it looks like the film will play on screens theatrically for just one night only before heading to the home formats, including 4K and potentially Disney+ eventually.
