‘Western Front’ helmer in talks to direct new Bourne movie at Universal

The film would be the sixth in the series.

The director of the Oscar-winning All Quiet On The Western Front, Edward Berger, is in negotiations to helm a new Jason Bourne movie over at Universal Pictures. If he takes on the project, Berger will develop the film with the studio which could see a return for Matt Damon, who would be offered the picture first.

Deadline reports the news of said plans, though there is no screenplay at this time, this would mark the sixth film in the franchise that started with The Bourne Identity back in 2002. Damon has starred in all but one of those, The Bourne Legacy, a side-quel that was led by Jeremy Renner.

The films have managed to pull in some $1.6 billion in box-office receipts.

The most recent Bourne project was the 2019 short-lived Bourne TV series Treadstone which was met with reasonably good reviews. However, it only ran for ten episodes.

Berger had huge success with ‘Western Front’ but has also received acclaim on the small stage directing episodes of Patrick Melrose and, more recently, Your Honor with Bryan Cranston. He does have a new feature project on the way, too; British thriller Conclave with Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow, Stanley Tucci, and Isabella Rossellini. The film is based on the book by Robert Harris and is said to revolve around the election of a new pope in the Vatican. Focus Features has picked that one up for distribution.
