It’s Friday so it is time to look at the new movies landing on the streaming services this weekend. There are a number of new features coming to the likes of Netflix, Apple TV+, Sky and MUBI so here’s the best of the bunch for the first weekend in March.
Sky Cinema
First, we take a look at Sky Cinema who have arguably the biggest release of the weekend with Michael Mann’s Ferrari. Adam Driver, Penelope Cruz, and Shailene Woodley lead out the cast of the film which hit cinemas late last year after a big Venice Film Festival debut. Neon have the movie in the US and will debut the film on the physical formats there from 12th March. Keeping in with their one film a day release over the weekend, Sky will also debut Mavka: The Forest Song and L’Immensità (also featuring Penelope Cruz) over the three days.
Netflix
Adam Sandler, Carey Mulligan and Paul Dano are among the cast of Netflix’s Spaceman, a sci-fi drama from Johan Renck. Having premiered on big screens last weekend following a premiere at February’s Berlinale, the film comes to the mass audiences of the streamer from 1st March. If that doesn’t fulfil you Sandler needs then Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punchdrunk Love is also available on Netflix from 1st March, too.
MUBI
If you’re a MUBI subscriber then there is a bit of a tree this weekend in Sofia Coppola’s latest film, Priscilla. The film sees Saltburn’s Jacob Elordi take on the role of Elvis and Venice Best Actress winner Cailee Spaeny as Priscilla Presley. The film was released onto British cinema screens on New Year’s Day. It makes its home debut for MUBI subscribers from 1st March.
Apple TV+
Apple also has a big release this weekend in Ridley Scott’s Napoleon which hits the streaming platform from 1st March. Having been available on premium VOD for the past few weeks, the Joaquin Phoenix-led epic follows the streamer’s model in releasing films in cinemas, then PVOD and onto their subscription platform after several months.
BFI Player
Heading to the BFI Player from 1st March is Takashi Miike’s horror film Audition, often regarded as one of the most gruesome films of all time. Ryo Ishibashi and Eihi Shiina lead the cast of the film which is based upon the novel of the same name by Ryu Murakami. The film was originally released back in 1999 with the story revolving around widower who takes an offer to screen girls at a special audition, arranged for him by a friend to find him a new wife. The one he fancies is not who she appears to be after all.
Shudder
My pick on the Shudder platform this week is 2010 documentary Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy, which looks at the legendary film franchise. At a touch under four hours, the documentary is a must for fans of the original movies, and indeed the horror genre in general.
