The weekend box-office estimates are in and the new sequel Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has taken the top spot at US cinemas edging out Warner Bros. Pictures’ Dune: Part Two. ‘Frozen Empire’ bagged a respectable $45.2 million in estimated revenue in its domestic territory over the three days compared to Dune’s $17.6 million. The Denis Villeneuve film has made a huge $233 million domestically since its release.
The ‘Frozen Empire’ numbers gave it an easy number one, but the film didn’t top the global box office this weekend, as per Comscore Movies. A total of $60.6 million is credited to the film for the territories in which it was released, including the U.S., but Kung Fu Panda 4 topped the worldwide box office with $72 million added to its account.
In the three spot in the US is Kung Fu Panda 4, the new animated movie led by Jack Black which opens in the UK next week in time for the Easter holidays. It made $16.8 million from Friday to Sunday domestically.
At four is horror movie Immaculate with Sydney Sweeney, another successful genre pic which took $5.3 million in its debut weekend Stateside. It was released in the UK this weekend as well though figures were not available at the time of writing. The horror movie only has a reported $10 million budget so it should see a good profit once those overseas numbers are in.
Rounding out the top fine is Mark Wahlberg-led Arthur The King which smashed in another $4.3 million taking its total haul to $14.6 million. Again, the film is yet to open in the UK.
This week’s other big opener was Late Night With The Devil which dropped in just outside the top five and number six with $2.3 million in total revenues.
