It’s the first proper day back at work in 2025 and those Hollywood rumour mills are already in motion with news that a Will Smith Matrix movie might be on the cards after the actor, producer and musician posted a cryptic video on his Instagram page.
Back in the 1990s, Smith famously turned down the role of Neo in The Matrix from the Wachowskis, the part eventually going to Keanu Reeves. Smith opted for steampunk sci-fi Wild Wild West and, well, the rest is history.
The video features just text, and reads:
In 1997, The Wachowskis offered Will Smith the role of Neo in The Matrix. Smith turned it down. He chose “Wild Wild West” believing it was a better fit for him at the time. But the question remains: what would The Matrix have been like with Will Smith as Neo. Wake up, Will. The Matrix has you …
So, are we finally about to see a Will Smith Matrix movie? Well, there are dozens of sites that have jumped on this but there has been no confirmation from anyone at Warner Bros. who have backed a new film in the sci-fi franchise. Drew Goddard is writing and directing the new movie which was first reported on back in April of last year.
Smith was last seen in the fourth Bad Boys movie Bad Boys: Ride Or Die which go decent enough reviews and took in a whopping $404 million from a reported $100 million budget. He’s still brings in the crowds at the box-office so he would be a decent headline for a new Matrix outing.
All this Will Smith as Neo news is just rumour at the moment but we’ll bring you bang up to date as soon as we hear anything different.
