Peter Berg Confirms Hancock 2 In The Works

Fans of the 2008 Will Smith-starrer HANCOCK will be pleased to know the film’s director has stated a sequel WILL happen. Peter Berg, who has science-fiction actioner BATTLESHIP to come this summer, has given a few quotes to give fans of the first film hope that the character will return.

We’ve been talking about the sequel between us, Will Smith, [producers] Michael Mann and Akiva Goldsman and myself. We’re all interested, but we literally just have trouble getting into the same room at the same time. We did have a series of meetings last year and started to hash out an idea for sequel – and Will Smith actually had the idea – so I think it will happen, it’s just a question of timing.

For myself, HANCOCK proved a disappointment. The premise of a flawed, alcoholic superhero angry at the world was one that has great potential. Add a cast that included with Smith, Jason Bateman, Charlize Theron and the brilliant Brit actor Eddie Marsan as the main villain. This would have been a dream project for any director and one that would be hard to screw up. It had some great moments but felt a little flat. A very short running time and a seemingly rushed finale certainly didn’t help and Eddie Marsan’s presence was wasted. Then again the film made close to $625 million worldwide, and with a sequel in the works, it seems enough moviegoer’s were happy with the film.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
