Indie Game: The Movie to become Indie Game: The TV Show

Big time producer Scott Rudin has snapped up Sundance hot property INDIE GAME: THE MOVIE, with plans to turn it into an HBO comedy. The film, a documentary, follows a number of independent video game makers, working outside the system and, from the trailer at least, pouring their hearts and souls into their creations. INDIE GAME: THE MOVIE has picked up a decent amount of acclaim at the Utah film festival, and the involvment of an Oscar clutching, money making guy like Rudin will only help it in the future.

Unlike the film, though, the series will be fictional, presumably taking the concept of “indie game designers” and leaving the rest of the documentary behind. It is an interesting concept, though, and fills a gap in HBO’s schedule. The network recently cancelled half hour comedies HUNG, BORED TO DEATH and HOW TO MAKE IT IN AMERICA; perplexingly large hit ENTOURAGE also finished its torturous and final eighth season late last year. INDIE GAME seems like almost the anti-ENTOURAGE; a bunch of (for lack of a better work) geeks putting genuine passion and energy into a project, facing the looming possibility that everything could blow up, making a waste of four years’ work. Scott Rudin’s presence is something of a mark of quality, but time will tell whether or not an audience wants to watch young men meticulously designing, and sometimes getting extremely frustrated by, a screenful of pixels and colours.
