Yes, Hit Girl and Kick-Ass will definitely be returning to the big screen after months of will-they-won’t-they from creator Mark Millar and director Matthew Vaughn.
Discussing upcoming projects with Scottish news site Daily Record, the comic book writer mentioned: ‘We shoot KICK-ASS 2 this Summer.’ The writer did not directly confirm Vaughn’s involvement, nor reveal any plot details, but it’s sufficient enough to get fans excited for months to come.
The comic sequel — currently on its 6th issue — follows Hit Girl attempting to lead a normal life while simultaneously training up Kick-Ass to become a more efficient hero. While the two form a team of super-heroes, nemesis Red Mist (now adopting a new persona called The Mother Fucker) returns with his own team of super-villains.
Though little was said about KICK-ASS 2, Millar was keen to delve into future adaptations of his work.
AMERICAN JESUS sees Jesus Christ returning in the midst of the financial crisis and opts to hide out in modern-day Scotland.
‘Jesus could have gone anywhere in the story. I thought, ‘you know what, where is nearest to my house?’.
‘I am trying to throw Coatbridge or Glasgow or Ayrshire into every story. I find it hard not to be patriotic because you are talking about your friends and family and Scotland is an extension of that.
‘I’m absolutely refusing to do anything over the next 20 years that shows Scotland in a bad light. It makes me feel good.’
He adds: ‘If you are doing a movie about the return of Jesus as the Bible prophesied in the Book of Revelation, you have got to do it straight and treat it with dignity. I’m not taking the piss. It will be treated like a proper film.’
‘I have never been cool. I am a Catholic and go to mass. A lot of people are surprised because much of my work is irreverent and expect the same with American Jesus. But I want it to be a beautiful film.’
‘A film about the returned Jesus Christ has amazing artistic potential. Jesus shows up in the middle of the financial crisis, America is in turmoil and the Eurozone is collapsing. They are quite apocalyptic times that we are living in with the gap between rich and poor.
‘It is the reverse of the Omen, which is about a kid who finds out he is the anti-Christ. This is a kid who finds out he is Jesus Christ.’
SECRET SERVICE follows a ‘neddy’ (nerdy) boy who comes a James Bond-esque spy.
“We came up with this idea of a wee ned who becomes a gentleman spy, ditching his trainers for his Savile Row suits and being taught how to speak properly.
‘The reason he gets chosen is that a guy like that is disposable. I am a massive Bond fan and Secret Service is like My Fair Lady meets James Bond.’
‘I am halfway through the comic and Matthew and I are halfway through the script. There is a good role for a 50-something actor to play an older gentleman spy training this young kid. There are not a lot of tough actors in that age group but you would never believe Colin Firth or Hugh Grant in a fight scene. We are bouncing names around.’
Other projects include JUPITER’S CHILDREN, which Millar hopes to be ‘the biggest sci-fi franchise since Star Wars’, and SUPERCROOKS which is described as ‘OCEAN’S ELEVEN meets X-MEN’.
There’s a lot on the writer’s plate but Mark Millar seems raring to go. So, in the words of Hit-Girl, ‘Okay, you cunts, let’s see what you can do now.’
