If the news is true, than Elle Fanning’s career just keeps expanding as Variety reports she’s set to star in Glasgow-based musical GOD HELP THE GIRL.
A musical based in Glasgow? Yes – written and directed by Belle And Sebastian singer Stuart Murdoch. He’s reportedly been working on the project since 2003 and later released an album he called ‘the precursor’ to the film (the album was released in 2009). Obviously, if you’re already a fan of his musical work, you probably knew about this, already…
The film gained a lot of its funding through Kickstarter, where fans could pledge money to help make the film possible. However, Barry Mendel is also producing it – and with his career credits spanning THE SIXTH SENSE (1999), THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS (2001) and BRIDESMAIDS (2011), he’s bound to make an impact on set.
Although the full cast list hasn’t been confirmed, we know that Olly Alexander (GULLIVER’S TRAVELS) will star as James, a downtrodden, negative guitarist who becomes a teacher-of-sorts to Cass (Fanning), an American girl living in Glasgow who decides to tag along with James and Eve’s friendship (Eve has not been assigned an actress yet).
I can imagine this will have a gritty, dark visual and it loosely reminds me of SUBMARINE (2010) – full of teenage angst and lingering camera shots. Elle Fanning just seems to be getting better and better, having already worked with the likes of J.J Abrams in SUPER 8 and David Fincher (THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON). As she’s only 14 she’s still got a long way to go, but it’s obvious Elle is one of the most sought-after actresses at the moment. Good for her!
Considering Jazmine grew up watching CARRY ON SCREAMING, THE LION KING and JURASSIC PARK on repeat for weeks on end, it made sense for her to study film at London South Bank University. It’s also a good thing that her course requires a lot of sitting down because she’s very accident-prone. When she’s not examining her bruises, she likes pretending that she doesn’t live in Southend-On-Sea and spends hours mindlessly blogging.
Favourite films include BLUE VALENTINE, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and TOY STORY 2.
