THE WORLD’S END got a little nearer today as Simon Pegg posted an image of the latest draft on his Twitter.
Pegg and Edgar Wright are currently working on their next project, THE WORLD’S END which will be the ‘final’ instalment of their ‘Blood & Ice Cream Trilogy.’ SHAUN OF THE DEAD (2004) and HOT FUZZ (2007) were of course his break through movies which he directed co-write with Pegg. The missing element here is their other long time collaborator, Nick Frost. The everlong sidekick/best friend to Pegg’s heroes, he starred in both of those feature films and the now legendary SPACED (1999-2001) which started it all. Jessica Stevenson is often neglected when reports of this sort do the rounds. It was she and not Wright who co-wrote SPACED with Pegg and starred as one of the best female leads in any comedy, Daisy Steiner. Aside from a cameo in SHAUN OF THE DEAD, she has not worked with Wright or Pegg on their collaborations, although she did reunite with Pegg for BURKE AND HARE, along with fellow SPACED alumni Bill Bailey and Reece Sheersmith.
‘I know we took our sweet time but as soon as I get back from outer space, we can finish this thing once and for all.’
Will this signify the end of these wonderful collaborations? With Pegg’s career hitting the stratosphere in the new STAR TREK sequel and Wright working on the next Marvel adaptation ANT MAN, they may have little time to work together properly. They still enjoy each other’s company on screen, Pegg and Frost worked their magic as the Thompson Twins in THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN (co-written by Wright) and wrote/starred in PAUL which may not have been directed by Wright (it was in fact Greg Mottola), it was the closest thing we’ll get to SPACED THE MOVIE. While this was happening, Wright was forging a path as a young auteur with the incredible SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD, which also had echoes of a big screen SPACED.
We still don’t know what THE WORLD’S END will even be about, but let us hope the denotations of endings will not come to pass. We’re sure there is plenty more Fried Gold to be served.
