Sharlto Copley Takes ‘OldBoy’ Villain & ‘Open Grave’

After his brilliant performance in Neill Blomkamp’s sci-fi actioner DISTRICT 9, Sharlto Copley was soon snapped up to play manic pilot Murdock in Joe Carnahan’s big-budget adaptation of hit television series THE A-TEAM. Since then, the South African actor has been rather quiet. He is currently re-teaming with Blomkamp for the mysterious sci-fi epic ELYSIUM, opposite Matt Damon, however he is about to get even busier with two new projects in the pipeline.

Copley is now nailed on for the villain role in Spike Lee’s OLDBOY remake, which already has cast Elizabeth Olsen and Josh Brolin. He was offered the role and has accepted the dark and disturbing character of Adrian Pryce, the billionaire responsible for lead Brolin’s unknown 15 year imprisonment. The original Korean films bleak and unforgettable finale, is up there with the best, and it will be interesting to see if Hollywood try and water it down.

Another lead role we will see Copley in, will be in grisly thriller OPEN GRAVE. He is confirmed to star as a man who wakes up in shock with no memory, and is surrounded by rotting corpses. It soon becomes apparent in flashbacks, that his character knows more than he realises about his gruesome new predicament. OPEN GRAVE will also feature Thomas Kretschman, Josie Ho, Max Wrottesley, Erin Richards and Joseph Morgan, and will be directed by APOLLO 18’s Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
