Fresh from colossal tweener snoozefest THE HUNGER GAMES, director Gary Ross is to turn his attention to a biopic of magician and escapologist Harry Houdini. The news comes following speculation regarding Ross’ status regarding THE HUNGER GAMES franchise, and the eventual confirmation that he would not return for the sequel, CATCHING FIRE.
The Houdini project will be adapted from ‘The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero’, by William Kalush and Larry Sloman, and may prove a more appropriate piece for Ross’ talents. Whilst his slower, more dramatic efforts PLEASANTVILLE and SEABISCUIT were applauded by critics, THE HUNGER GAMES proved that action is not Ross’ forte. The Houdini film promises to be a more thoughtful and character-based production – although a some child-based hand-to-hand combat is always welcome.
The sequel to the $600 million HUNGER GAMES is set to directed by Francis Lawrence after Ross declined to return.
