A bit like Ross and Rachael off FRIENDS, relations between the Federation and Klingons have been an on-off affair over the generations of STAR TREK lore. And whether it’s as friend or foe, there was a little doubt the alien race would make an appearance in JJ Abrams’ STAR TREK 2, the sequel to his ace 2009 reboot.
During an interview clip screened at the MTV Movie Awards a few nights ago, a very brief glimpse of a Klingon was spotted behind the sci-fi wunderkind. The image appears to be of an armoured Klingon warrior type, the design of which matches a Klingon featured (but axed from) Abrams’ first film.
As you can see, the helmet features the forehead ridges for which the race are known, but it poses the question: what will they look like beneath the armour. For those new to STAR TREK, the original Klingons had a much more human-esque appearance (with standard sinister goatees), and their pasty-shaped heads only become a mainstay following the first STAR TREK film in 1979.
So will Abrams’ Klingons kick it old school or… erm, not so old school? With the sci-fi wunderkind having already rewritten the franchise’s continuity, he can do pretty much whatever he likes.
STAR TREK 2 stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Bruce Greenwood, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller. It arrives in UK cinemas 17th May 2013.
