Massive Success For Spidey In Asia

With its UK release from tomorrow (t-minus (roughly) 2 hours) we’re expecting big things from THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, especially in terms of audience numbers and profits. Opening with a mixed bag of reviews from critics, we know what they think; we’re just waiting with baited breath as to what the public think.

However, the film has done rather well over in Asia. Opening in thirteen Asian territories over the previous weekend, Spidey took in $50.2 million – rather impressive! In Japan, a country known for its love of superheroes, the film raked in $11.4 million – taking up a whopping 84% of Japan’s overall box-office takings for those two days. In Korea, Spidey netted $13.4 million. In statistical terms, that puts it in third place for a Hollywood film on its opening weekend (behind the first two TRANSFORMERS movies). It also took 24% more than the 3rd SPIDER-MAN film and – surprisingly – it’s 10% higher than AVENGERS ASSEMBLE.

If those numbers weren’t impressive enough for you, how about this. ICE AGE: CONTINENTAL DRIFT, starring some of Hollywood’s biggest voices, opened in 34 territories. Over the two days it took in $78 million – impressive, I hear you cry. Yes, that’s all well and good unless you take in the fact that it had nearly three times the amount of exposure and didn’t even take double what THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN got in only 13 areas.

It’ll be interesting to see how the film fairs over here. It’s also a wise move not to open the film on the same week as THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. Spidey would be squished.

Considering Jazmine grew up watching CARRY ON SCREAMING, THE LION KING and JURASSIC PARK on repeat for weeks on end, it made sense for her to study film at London South Bank University. It’s also a good thing that her course requires a lot of sitting down because she’s very accident-prone. When she’s not examining her bruises, she likes pretending that she doesn’t live in Southend-On-Sea and spends hours mindlessly blogging. Favourite films include BLUE VALENTINE, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and TOY STORY 2.
