Marvel’s sequel to 2011 superhero film THOR gained a full title at San Diego Comic-Con at the weekend, and now we have a few potential plot details to share – including the film’s main antagonists.
Hollywood stuntman James Grogan, who is currently working on THOR: THE DARK WORLD, accidentally revealed the villains during an interview with website IReviewToo. Warning: spoilers ahead!
‘The other day I was working on THOR 2. I had a load of stunt guys in and the director [Alan Taylor] came in and he said ‘Look, we want you all to be elves,’ and I was like ‘What the hell is an elf anyway?’ And he said ‘I want you all to walk around like these supernatural animals.’
Looking at the full title of the film, it’s likely Grogan’s referring to the Dark Elves, lead by Malekith the Accursed. To those who aren’t so well-adjusted to the complete history of Marvel comics, allow us at THN (with a little help from our old friend Google) to fill you in.
Malekith is a major villain in the Thor universe, who teams up with Loki to secure the Casket of Ancient Winters. Once opened, said Casket unleashes a powerful arctic force, capable of freezing anything in its path – including Asgardians. It can even temporarily disrupt the power of Odin. The catch is that it can only be opened by a Frost Giant – hence the need of Malekith for Loki.
Tom Hiddleston has already confirmed that he’ll be reprising his role from THOR and AVENGERS ASSEMBLE, so while Grogan’s words shouldn’t be taken as one hundred percent accurate – maybe he accidentally stumbled onto the set of THE HOBBIT? – the existing source material does lend them credence.
This news also suggests that Thanos, spotted in the post-credits AVENGERS sequence, won’t be making an appearance here – the only pre-AVENGERS 2 film that he would have been likely to appear in at all. Stay tuned to THN for more info on THOR: THE DARK WORLD and the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – Phase 2 films.
THOR: THE DARK WORLD is set for release on 8th November 2013, and stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddleston.
