The Dark Knight Rises To Become Biggest Non-3D Opening Film Ever

All of us at The Hollywood News are truly sickened and appalled by the events in Denver, Colorado in the early hours of Friday morning, and our thought and prayers are with the families of those affected. Warner Brothers have been praised for the way in which they have handled the . aftermath of the shootings, which took place at a midnight showing of perhaps their biggest film of the year, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES .While the studio and Rentrak, the company that tracks box-office results are not releasing figures for the opening weekend in the United States or indeed worldwide, Deadline and various other sources are reporting that the film is on course to become the biggest non-3D opening film in the home territories with about $163 million in the US and Canada over the three days.

The figure is way ahead of THE DARK KNIGHT ($158m) and this year’s THE HUNGER GAMES ($152m), which opened at number three and number four on the all time list respectively. Ahead of them is HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 and AVENGERS ASSEMBLE or THE AVENGERS (depending of where you live), both 3D films which opened to $169m and the massive $207m for Joss Whedon’s 2012 superhero film back in May. Obviously 3D films cost more to go and see, and tend to play on more cinemas. There is no doubt that the recent, hugely tragic events have affected the box-office take of Christopher Nolan’s latest, but the reported $163m is a substantial amount of money to bank over just three days, even if it all seems a little irrelevant in light of things.
