Denzel Washington IS The Equalizer!

Back in December, THN reported that Sony Pictures were hoping to land Oscar-winner Denzel Washington as the lead of Robert McCall for their big-screen version of 80s hit television series, THE EQUALIZER. Today we can now confirm that Washington will indeed take the role previously played by the legendary British actor Edward Woodward.

Both Sony and Washington are hoping to develop the film as an ongoing franchise, which will see private detective McCall, turn ruthless-yet-clever vigilante. The original series ran for four seasons between 1985-89 and was a permanent feature on the box in my household and that synthesized opening score remains as familiar today, as it was in the mid 1980s.

Shooting will begin in April 2013 for a release expected the following year, with script by THE EXPENDABLES 2’s Richard Wenk. A director is still to be chosen but ones being considered are Pierre Morel (TAKEN), Nicolas Winding Refn (DRIVE), Gavin O’Connor (WARRIOR) and Gareth Evans (THE RAID). Who would you like to helm the film and what are your thoughts on Washington taking over Woodward,  as always, we’d love to know!

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
