Could The Hobbit Turn Into A Longer Unexpected Journey?

Whilst at this years Comic-Con, Peter Jackson discussed how, much like his legendary LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, he has shot a mountain of footage for THE HOBBIT that sadly may not feature in the final edit. Then again, it may well not go to waste after all, as it’s been revealed that Jackson and the studios involved in production are in discussions to possibly turn his two epics into a trio.

If the plan comes off, fans of the original films and J. R. R Tolkien will be very pleased with the news. I mean, who doesn’t want to travel to Middle Earth as many times as possible. However, some will see it as another way to milk a franchise for all its worth as THE TWILIGHT SAGA did and THE HUNGER GAMES finale recently announced.

For me, it’s a tricky one as Jackson’s a director who brings passion to every aspect of filmmaking, and if he feels another trip to Middle Earth is needed to fully tell Bilbo’s tale I trust him completely. Jackson will no doubt need a few pick-up shots and a number re-shoots if they do move forward with this plan. Which means more money to spend, but also more box-office revenue.

THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY and THE HOBBIT: THERE AND BACK AGAIN are currently scheduled for December release this year and next. The cast includes Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Hugo Weaving, Andy Serkis, Evangeline Lilly, Luke Evans and Cate Blanchett.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
