BBC Two Commissions Doctor Who Documentary-Drama

After months of fan speculation, the BBC has officially revealed that a documentary-drama telling the behind the scenes story of DOCTOR WHO’s conception in 1963, entitled AN ADVENTURE IN SPACE & TIME, has been commissioned to air on BBC Two in 2013, just in time for the show’s 50th Anniversary.

The 90-minute drama is written by regular DOCTOR WHO writer and enthusiast Mark Gatiss (also best known as one quarter of THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN and co-creator of BBC’s other major flagship drama SHERLOCK).  In the press release Gatiss said:

“This is the story of how an unlikely set of brilliant people created a true Television original. And how an actor – William Hartnell – stereotyped in hard-man roles became a hero to millions of children. I’ve wanted to tell this story this for more years than I can remember! To make it happen for ‘Doctor Who’s 50th birthday is quite simply a dream come true”.

Being a lifelong Whovian, this announcement has made me extremely excited for next year’s anniversary celebrations.  The creation of the show is an interesting story in itself, and one that should be told!

The drama will be cast and filmed later this year, for broadcast in 2013.  DOCTOR WHO show-runner Steven Moffat serves as Executive Producer on the Drama, alongside fellow WHO Exec Caroline Skinner.

From an early age, Matt Dennis dreamt of one day becoming a Power Ranger. Having achieved that dream back in the noughties, he’s now turned his hand to journalism and broadcasting. Matt can often be found in front of a TV screen, watching his current favourite shows such as DOCTOR WHO, GAME OF THRONES, SHERLOCK, DAREDEVIL, and THE WALKING DEAD, though he’s partial to a bit of vintage TV from yesteryear. Matt also co-presents the Geek Cubed podcast, which you can download from iTunes. It’s quite nice.
