Thought to many to be a lost cause at this stage Adam McKay has turned the tables, tweeting to say Paramount are now pursuing an adaptation of the graphic novel ‘The Boys’.
McKay has been attached to the project since 2010, with no real news besides a rumour that Russell Crowe was up for a role, and the project was believed to be stuck forever in filmmaking purgatory. However, McKay has tweeted: ‘Actually Paramount picked it up and we’re still developing,’ bringing new hope for the project.
For those of you who aren’t familiar, ‘The Boys’ is by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, and follows a government-sanctioned group who hate, and I mean hate, superheroes. An intimidating bunch who also possess super strength and speed, they track down and hold heroes accountable for their crimes behind the PR-friendly scenes. It is a particularly dark affair in which superheroes are portrayed to be far from the goodie-two-shoes they usually appear to be.
Main character Wee Hughie is apparently based on Simon Pegg, begging the question, will Pegg be interested in taking the role? He certainly enjoys the comics enough to get involved.
Adam McKay (ANCHORMAN, STEP BROTHERS) is used to more comedic work, so if the project does go forward it will be interesting to see how he deals with the horrifically dark moments from the comics. So dark is their nature in fact, some believe the film will never be able to go ahead without completely distancing itself from the graphic novel series. In any case it’s certainly a reason to go out and grab issue one.
