R.I.P. Tony Scott: Director Of ‘Top Gun’ Takes His Own Life

Shocking and saddening news this morning as it has been confirmed that British director Tony Scott has jumped to his death at the age of 68. He reportedly climbed a fence on the Vincent Thomas bridge near Long Beach, California at 12:30 pm local time and leapt off. Police apparently also found a suicide note in his car that was left on the bridge.

Tony Scott was the director of such films as TOP GUN (1986), TRUE ROMANCE (1993), CRIMSON TIDE (1995), and MAN ON FIRE (2004). He was reportedly working on a sequel to TOP GUN at the time of his death. Tony Scott and his brother Ridley Scott were partners in Scott Free Productions, a production company that was responsible for hit US Shows such as THE GOOD WIFE, and NUMB3RS as well as their own films and other projects.

Tony Scott began life in Northumberland and graduated from London’s Royal College of Art. He directed many adverts for his brother’s company before following his brother into directing feature films with THE HUNGER (1983), a vampire film that starred Catherine Deneuve and David Bowie. After that came his phenomenal success TOP GUN with its awesomeness of 80s tunes, brilliant aerial photography and a star making turn from Tom Cruise.

This is terrible news and our thoughts are with Tony Scott’s family at this time. He was an incredible talent with a unique style and approach to film making.  May he rest in peace.

Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.
