We here at THN have been lucky enough to score a little sneak peek at what to expect on the forthcoming AVENGERS ASSEMBLE Blu-ray & DVD. If that sentence alone makes you want to punch your computer screen in a jealous rage, then maybe it’s best you don’t read on.
First of all, Blu-ray lovers can look forward to ITEM 47, a short film that’s exclusive to the set. A brief yet action packed little story that looks at what happens to the Chitauri weapons following the events of AVENGERS, it’s a fun little bonus, though unlike the previous Marvel One-Shots from the THOR & CAPTAIN AMERICA Blu-ray releases, it does suffer due to the lack of Clark Gregg as agent Phil Coulson, who previously helped bridge the gap between the feature films and the shorts. Still, it’s a solid, entertaining 12-minute extra that is definitely worth buying the Blu-ray for.
Elsewhere on the disc there’s some fantastic deleted scenes (including some great Steve Rogers footage that was really shouldn’t have been cut) and an absolutely hilarious Gag-Reel. Fans expecting a huge ‘Making Of’ will be disappointed by ‘A Visual Journey’, a light and fluffy promo video that sees some sets being built, which happens sadly to be the only feature even resembling a ‘Making Of’ Featurette on the Blu-ray or DVD release. There’s no Joss Whedon commentary either, a massive oversight on Marvel Studios and Paramount’s part.
However, Sainsbury’s shoppers get an exclusive 90-Minute documentary entitled ‘Building a Cinematic Universe’ which details the production of all six Avengers films, from IRON MAN all the way through to AVENGERS ASSEMBLE, examining the thought and creativity that went into bringing the shared Marvel universe to the big screen. All the key players, including the cast-members, producer Kevin Feige, and director Joss Whedon are interviewed here, and whilst it’s focus on the AVENGERS ASSEMBLE is perhaps not as in-depth as fan boys would hope, it’s still an interesting and fascinating watch.
Regardless of what’s been left out of the REGION 2 release, we’re still going to be queuing up at out local DVD Retailer come next week. Will you?
AVENGERS ASSEMBLE is released on DVD & Blu-Ray nationwide on Monday 17th September.
