We’d heard whispers when the project was first picked up in April by MGM and Ghosthouse Pictures, that Sam Raimi was possibly looking to direct (as well as produce) a remake of Tobe Hooper’s (or Steven Spielberg, say cast and crew) POLTERGEIST. This was quickly brushed off by the EVIL DEAD director, who said he and MGM were looking at potential candidates. As recently as this week, new screenwriter David Lindsay-Abaire had come onboard to develop a script from scratch and with it bringing high expectations for a new take on the haunted house classic and just who is going to helm/star.
Well, while promoting his work on animated effort RISE OF THE GUARDIANS, Lindsay-Abaire looks to have let slip confirmation that Raimi is indeed looking at directing the tale of young Carol Anne and her spooky visit to ‘the other side’. While we don’t know how close he’ll stick with the original story, it’s the prospect of Raimi returning to horror that has fans licking their lips. The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg tweeted:
Lindsay-Abaire told me that Raimi was directing it. I’m very confident that that’s what he said.
We await confirmation, but in the meantime Raimi has the upcoming fantasy prequel OZ: THE GREAT & POWERFUL due early next year, as well producing a remake of his own gory classic EVIL DEAD, which received a heap of welcome attention with the intense first image and trailer at this weekend’s New York Comic-Con. We’re hoping to have that official first look at Fede Alvarez’ reboot later this week, so keep an eye out on THN.
