Mark Millar was recently hired by Fox as creative consultant on their Marvel properties in an attempt to make them seem more co-existant with each other (kind of like Marvel Studios has been doing). Now Mark Millar has talked a little bit about what we can expect from the next ‘X-Men’ outing X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST.
[Matthew] Vaughn is going for a big sci-fi style thing with X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, It’s X-MEN meets THE TERMINATOR. You’ve got robots, you’ve got time travel, you’ve got superheroes – it’s got everything in one film. Cost-wise it’s going to go up, and ambitious-wise it’s gone up, but Vaughn can handle it. Vaughn made KICK-ASS for $28 million.
This certainly sounds like we might get the cinematic debut of the Sentinels, a group of huge robots that are used to track down and kill mutants. Featured in the comics since practically the beginning, the Sentinels were major players in the original ‘days of Future Past’.
Also, the time travel element of the story has brought rumours that we may see Patrick Stewart reprise his role as Professor Xavier (as well as others from the first three movies), but for now it’s still unclear what exactly the plot will contain and how much time travelling there will be. At least it sounds like Matthew Vaughn will have a decent budget to play around with, and with a stellar first go at the series with X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, count me onboard for another one.
X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is to be directed by Matthew Vaughn. While no official casting is in place, it is fairly safte to assume that at least James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence will return for the sequel. It is currently scheduled for a UK release on 18th July 2014.
