Homeland Season 2 Blog: Episode 2.4 New Car Smell *SPOILERS*

Director: David Semel

Writer: Meredith Stiehm

Breakdown: Saul decides to pay David Estes a visit, to show him the SD card of Brody that – so far – only Carrie and him have seen. Upon witnessing the truth behind the new Congressman, Saul and David devised a plan to tail Brody in every aspect of his life but in complete secrecy and away from the usual protocol.  This sees the return of Virgil (David Marciano) and his strange co-worker, plus the introduction of opinionated analyst Peter Quinn, played by British actor Rupert Friend. As they spent their time hoping that Brody gets in contact with Abu Nazir (or one of his party), they arrange for Carrie to ‘bump into him’ in the hope of spooking him and, it seemingly works.

In other parts of the episode, drunken ex-military pal Lauder (Marc Menchaca) heads over to Brody’s house to only find Jess. She’s rescued again by Mike, as he heads over to take him away, Lauder then raises his points about Tom Walker and Brody being a team back when they fought together and how something still isn’t right. Notably this time, Mike agrees and they start to wonder if something else has been going on.

The episode finishes with a drunken Brody inviting Carrie over for a drink, as he’s now living in a hotel, and just as you think she’s heading back to the surveillance room, she turns up at his door and then tells him everything she knows including the killer line “You’re a disgrace to your nation”. It looks he’s about to kill her but undercover CIA agents smash down the door and take him. It leaves us with a trailing shot of an adrenaline-fueled Carrie, equally losing it and loving it.

Opinion on episode: The first thought? Oh Carrie, what have you done! From the shock factor of her going ‘rogue’ and taking Brody down with all the information she’s been equipped with, she’s also ripped the season apart with a devastating change in tactics. Her cathartic rant has once again turned the series on its head, as we all waited for him to give something away.

What will happen next? It’s another interesting mix of possibilities. Brody might be American public enemy number one and the CIA would look like heroes, especially Carrie, if we assume they release the details because they did cover his head. It also means that informant-journalist Roya Hammad no longer has her man on the inside. Does this mean Abu Nazir will strike early, in the fear that Brody will break? Or is there something that we’ve all missed? Also, on a family level, it’s set to tear them apart because his daughter Dana has fallen for the Veep’s son, and Jess will be broken by the truth.

Rating:  After last weeks slower paced episode, we fully expected a gradual change in proceedings but instead, they’ve again set off a whole new chain of events.
