Our younger readers may not remember, nor be able to comprehend, but back in the year 1999 there was one thing that united the world in terror. No, it wasn’t THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, which had just spanked the box-office like it was a naughty boy at a catholic school. Nor was it the racially insensitive floppy eared moron Jar Jar Binks who had plagued toy shops for months in the build-up and subsequent release of STAR WARS EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE. No! What we feared was something called THE MILLENIUM BUG. This was a theoretical computer malfunction that suggested when the year 2000 hit, all computers and technology would believe the world had shot back in time to 1900, causing a new dark age where planes would fall from the sky, TVs would revert to black and white, and your toaster would mount and impregnate your dog.
This didn’t happen and we all lived happily ever after. Well, not quite everyone, as detailed in Kenneth Cran’s feature debut THE MILLENIUM BUG, which suggests that the thing we all feared wasn’t a computer virus at all. The film sees the Haskin family go on a camping trip to avoid all the palaver concerning Y2K. Unfortunately they are accosted by a hillbilly clan, which really puts a dampener on the family bonding stuff. It turns out that things are going to get even worse. Maybe the poster can give us a clue as to how.
THE MILLENIUM BUG is a “no CGI” monster movie, and judging by the trailer below, it looks a hell of a lot of fun. The effects look great, and to go for a massive monster without any computers is very brave in this day and age. THE MILLENIUM BUG is getting a DVD release through Green Apple Entertainment on 18th December 2012. That’s just before my birthday. Hint, hint!
