We’re soon to see a new reboot of infamous gangster SCARFACE, previously brought to life twice in two absolute classics. First as a familiar slick-suited hoodlum in the original 1932 black and white effort headlined by Paul Muni (a character inspired by notorious crime boss Al Capone). However, it was Al Pacino’s heartless, power-hungry headcase that most remember from Brian DePalma’s 1982 film, featuring a sizzling script from Oliver Stone, who took the character of Tony Montana and gave him a cuban makeover (that included chainsaws).
When we announced the news over a year ago many were not happy in team THN. However, when David Ayer was confirmed as writer we felt a little easier but we later saw rewrites were being done by DONNIE BRASCO scribe Paul Attanasio. Since then things have cooled off… until now!
We are now hearing the character has been give another origin overhaul which will see him reinvigorated as a small-time crook who masterminds a rise to control his own Mexican drug cartel. Sounds interesting and at least not revisiting or following the same path as we’ve already been down. Which suggests those behind the production know they would have a mountain to climb in matching other interpretations.
