After years of restored and re-released classics, I’m delighted to say that Disney have ventured into original story-telling once again. After the superb TANGLED relit the fairy-tale fire, WRECK-IT RALPH takes them to another level with an impressive, beautifully created whole new world that brings us into the modern day. Moreover, it’s entwined with cleverly-crafted nostalgia that will bring audiences of every age into the cinema, and quite right to.

WRECK-IT RALPH sets it focus on the title character Ralph (the first of a perfect cast and voiced by John C Reilly), a video game baddie, who’s started to go to therapy sessions with other ‘bad’ characters from games for cathartic reasons. All Ralph really wants is to be a hero for the day but as his role is destroying buildings for good guy Fit-It Felix (voiced by 30 ROCK’s Jack McBrayer) to do exactly that, fix and clean up Ralph’s destruction, surely that would never be possible? However, when Ralph decides to change games (something that is strictly forbidden) and start his mission to fulfil his dream, he instead brings chaos to his arcade home.

The film really succeeds in that vein of the classic TOY STORY trilogy, so for all the jokes that you’ll know as old gaming characters and references, it’s also one of those perfect tales for the kids because there are plenty of sight gags, stupid behaviour and general amusement. In fact, I’d be more than content to say that not only does it have plenty of twists and turns, it will also get you with an unexpected emotive attachment, well, it did for me anyway.

Although you think you find yourself on a familiar journey, this one with the voices of John C Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jane Lynch, Alan Tudyk, Jack McBrayer and Dennis Haysbert to name some, this film is on top form and whisks you off on an imaginative adventure that flips the notion of being bad into something fresh and different.

WRECK-IT RALPH is an absolute retro-rock and roll adventure, mixing the modern world technology with a positive, forward thinking narrative with that fine Disney staple of reflecting social status, together with those usual comments on how we all judge people on appearances, rather than what they can achieve if you have a little belief. Most importantly, remember: “I’m bad, and that’s good. I will never be good, and that’s not bad. There’s no-one I’d rather be then me.”
