For a moment there is looked as though we were getting somewhere. With an original list of eight names whittled down to just three, it seemed as though we were close to finding our star for Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. Yesterday it was reported Joseph Gordon Levitt was up for the role of Peter Quill, also known as Star Lord, but now two new names have been dropped into the mix as well as rumours on who Marvel are looking at for Drax The Destroyer.
First up is SMALLVILLE’s Lex Luthor, Michael Rosenbaum, who worked with GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY director James Gunn’s comedy series PG PORN. Rosenbaum tweeted:

Not having been a name previously mentioned it would appear that Marvel are keeping their options open, which is cemented by new reports that Marvel are also looking at John Krasinski for the role. Although maybe not very heroic seeming at first glance, Krasinski was one of the top candidates for the role of CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER before Chris Evans was cast.
We’re also hearing news of other casting wishlists concerning the science-fiction heroes. Isaiah Mustafa, Brian Patrick Wade, and Dave Bautista are all in consideration for the role of Drax The Destroyer. Drax was created from the soul of a human with the purpose of destroying Thanos, the enemy seen at the end of THE AVENGERS. As for those rumoured for the role Isaiah Mustafa is better known as the Old Spice guy who wants ladies to look at their men, and then back at him. In the past Mustafa has expressed interest in another Marvel character, Luke Cage. Bautista is a former WWE wrestler who recently appeared in The RZA’s THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS. Wade has had a number of roles, such as Penny’s muscular ex-boyfriend Kurt, in THE BIG BANG THEORY. Judging by those choices it seems as though Drax will be cast on mostly a physical level.
As the rumour mill continues to churn, I’m sure we’ll be hearing about many more casting possibilities in the future, as all this is just for two characters so far, and THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY will be comprised of a team of five. But characters Rocket Raccoon and Groot will probably be CGI.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is released 1st August 2014. It is directed by James Gunn.
