If you love big robots, monsters, and anime as much as I do, then you probably feel as though you have died and gone to heaven at the moment. As much as I love superheroes we need a new blockbuster fad, and that looks to be adapting Japanese tokuhatsu shows, kaiju films, and anime. Which is fine by me. We already have Guillermo Del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM out this year, with Gareth Edwards’ take on GODZILLA in 2014, with other adaptations such as GAIKING also in the mix.
Now it appears that commercial director (in that he directs adverts) Nic Mathieu has been hired by Warner Bros. to take on his first feature film, which will be an screen translation of anime, ROBOTECH. Tobey Maguire has been attached as a producer since 2007, but it appears with recent and upcoming robotic successes, ROBOTECH has finally received the push it deserves. Judging by his commercial work, which you can view here, Mathieu certainly has an eye for the visual elements. Lawrence Kasdan was once in charge of scripting the film, but who know what talent will remain attached at this point.
ROBOTECH sees humans build robots from alien technology that crash lands on Earth. The human race soon find themselves in the middle of interplanetary battles, which is only fair because otherwise the show would be rather dull. Although Mathieu is yet to prove himself with a feature film, he has also been attached to two other science-fiction based stories. He is said to be helming a David Koepp scripted sci-fi called THE WIND as well as THE STORY OF YOUR LIFE, an alien drama produced by 21 Laps.
