‘Star Wars – Episode II & III’ 3D Re-releases Officially Cancelled

Ten Star Wars Parodies Phantom Menace

In a move that might not be completely surprising considering Lucasfilm’s sale to Disney and the recent developments in the creating of new Star Wars films, it is now being reported that the 3D re-releases of EPISODE II – ATTACK OF THE CLONES and EPISODE III – REVENGE OF THE SITH have been cancelled in order to put all of the company’s focus onto the creation of the new trilogy.

The decision might also have been spurred on by the somewhat meager return of EPISODE I – THE PHANTOM MENACE (it ‘only’ made just over $100 million) which considering the costs of re-formatting it into 3D and the advertising, in all probability didn’t make much of a profit. The 3D re-issue was also seen by many as nothing more than a quick cash grab, and it might be a matter of trying to keep the fans positive about Disney’s handling of the franchise that they ultimately decided it wasn’t worth it.

I think this is absolutely the right decision as there was little need to remind people of how botched a job the prequels were. It seems wiser to just move on from the past, and try to put all their efforts into actually creating a Star Wars property that is memorable, respectful to the originals, and…you know…good. With JJ Abrams on board, I think they’ve moved a step in the right direction, and I’m very excited to see what he will do with the new films.
