We were left bemused as to why Matthew Vaughn had declined to return for another KICK-ASS (although he still serves as a producer). We were even more taken aback when he dropped out of directing a sequel to his excellent X-MEN prequel, FIRST CLASS. What was up with the underrated director? After all, he’d done such a splendid job on both. Alas, we now know he was shortlisted to direct Disney/Lucasfilm’s STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, but was pipped to the post by geek-God, J.J. Abrams.
Again, Vaughn is onboard as producer of X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, which sees a directing return to the franchise for Bryan Singer. Yet, we’ve heard very little of any directing gigs following the jaw-dropping news of the Jedi variety. Well, he’s still no near to getting behind the camera but we’ve now learned Vaughn will produce 20th Century Fox’s reboot of Marvel’s super-powered family, FANTASTIC FOUR. The film is to be helmed by Josh Trank, who impressed early last year with CHRONICLE.
He’ll collaborate once again with with KICK-ASS comic-book creator, Mark Miller, who recently landed the position at Fox as their very own comic-book/superhero creative consultant. We’ll keep informed of any casting developments as they happen, which is sure to be in the near future.
