This summer will see the return of the iconic comic-book character Superman, following a big-screen hiatus of seven years. While Bryan Singer’s poorly-recieved SUPERMAN RETURNS (a sequel I loved) may have been a slog for some, Zack Snyder will reboot the high-flying superhero into a more ‘reality grounded’ alien via the help of THE DARK KNIGHT trilogy’s Christopher Nolan, who serves as producer.
Henry Cavill takes on the title role of the MAN OF STEEL, who is torn between serving as Earth’s saviour or joining fellow Kryptonian, General Zod (Michael Shannon), when he arrives on the planet with plans of world domination. I’m sure we expect Kal-El will make the right decision after being guided by loving parents Jonathan and Martha Kent (Kevin Costner and Diane Lane) following his arrival from Krypton as a newborn baby. There is also Russell Crowe’s real pop, Jor El, to call upon for a little advice too via the Fortress Of Solitude.
Snyder gave this nugget of info about what we can expect from the film:
We’ve tried to make a Superman movie where he does stuff and you go, ‘Yeah, if I was Superman, that’s what I’d do. Even though he’s an alien, he’s more relatable, more human.
Cavill added:
This is a Superman for a modern age. It’s not betraying anything that Superman is, but it is grounding everything in reality. It’s the story of this incredible being who can do incredible things, but whom we can associate with. Because he’s gone through troubling stuff and had to make tough choices…
Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
