A ‘Lethal Weapon 5’ has long been in the offing with developments tracking back many years, but updates have been scarce as of late. Sadly, franchise director Richard Donner passed away all of the way back in 2021 and we haven’t heard a lot about the project since.
Well, now it looks like star and the fifth film’s director Mel Gibson has been speaking about the planned movie to the Inspire Me podcast recently. It sounds like the movie is indeed happening and Gibson is still very much involved on both sides of the camera. Take a look.
“I’m going to direct the 5th film in the Lethal Weapon series. You know, Richard Donner, who did the other four, sadly passed away. He was a good friend, and he kind of tasked me with carrying the flag home on that one. It’ll be an honor for me to do that. He had gotten a fair way into the screenplay, so we’ve used what was there, and we kept poking at it, working at it a little. I’m pretty happy with it, it’s good, I had a lot of fun doing it.“
As with the other movies, particularly the first two, it sounds like a mix of serious and comedic content is king here, too.
Gibson added: “It’s funny! But it’s also pretty serious too. It tackles a couple of hard issues. So I’m looking forward to [it].“
No word on who will return – Danny Glover is a given, though, as Roger Murtaugh – right?
We’ll keep you updated on any more news as it is fired our way.
